On a hot day last week a group of Tri-Point students traveled to Paxton to collect prairie cicadas for reintroduction to Don Gardner's prairie in Kempton. This is the second year of the project, and the students have gotten good at their work! Mitch Woods collected the first cicada seconds after stepping off of the bus. Within half an hour the group had collected 4 females for transplanting, and had caught and released many males. This rare cicada is only found in some old prairies, and the students are hoping to establish a population in Kempton to help expand the insect's numbers and increase their habitat. They've presented their work at the Wild Things Conference in Chicago, and Pru Davies wrote an article about the project that was featured in this summer's issue of the Illinois Audubon Society's magazine. Prairie cicadas lay eggs on coneflowers, and the young spend many years underground before emerging. The students plan to publish their research once the population becomes established. The student scientists working on this project are Mitch Woods, Hunter Davies, Pru Davies, Trace Rogers, Luke Tompkins, and Phoebe Davies.

Today the 8th-grade class met with the kindergarten class for the final time this year. They met and worked together various times throughout the year, however, during this last visit, the 8th-grade students read and gave the kindergarten students books that they created. The 8th graders wrote them based on the interests of their kindergarten buddies. This tradition started over 30 years ago when Nancy Knilands was the Jr. High ELA teacher. The tradition is extra special this year because this 8th-grade class was the last class to receive books from Mrs. Kniland’s 8th class when they were in kindergarten. Thank you Mrs. Knilands for starting this tradition so many years ago and setting the foundation for it to continue into the future. Mrs. Andrews and Ms. Storm would like to also give a special thanks to Tri-Point PACE for allowing the grant to cover the expenses of the books and this project. The continued support helps the program continue to grow.

Looking back on the junior high school's field trips, I would just like to extend a big thank you to our administration and board of education for supporting these fantastic opportunities for students to extend their education and explore the world outside of their communities!! They often comment that the field trips are their favorite part of the year.
