6th grade Science students enjoyed a hike in the prairie and had a star party on Wednesday evening. They checked out the native spring flowers at Don Gardner's prairie in Kempton, and looked for frogs and insects. Once it got dark, they got out telescopes to observe Venus, Mars, and some constellations they had been studying in class. The evening wrapped up with s'mores around the campfire.

The DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) hosts contests every year to promote good citizenship. The contests include the Junior American Citizens contest and the American History Essay contest. This year, for the Junior American Citizens contest, students could enter a poster, stamp, poem, or short story all based on the theme, “The 200th Anniversary of the Santa Fe Trail: Moving Stars and Stripes Westward.” Tri-Point had two students win for their poster work. Olivea English won 1st place in the state and 2nd in the North Central Division for 7th grade, and Kenya Morgan won 1st place for 8th grade and 1st in the North Central Division.
Tri-Point also brought home two awards for the American History Essay contest. This year’s theme focused on the Second Continental Congress. The students used historical data from the time period to write a journal about a family’s experience and hardship. Owen Griner’s essay won 1st place for 7th grade, and Lance Hummel’s essay won 1st place for 8th grade. These students were honored at an award ceremony Sunday afternoon. Congratulations on your great work, Olivea, Kenya, Owen, and Lance.

Art Teacher Akiko Thorson-Saffer and Language Arts teacher Keri Andrews (along with Hillary Sawyer from PBL) were recognized by the Governor Thomas Ford Chapter of The Daughters of the American Revolution today for many years of getting kids involved in the poster and essay contests that the DAR hosts annually. Four of our students won awards this year. Congratulations!
